Resumo

Conservation Units are essential for the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, with the Caxiuanã National Forest being a strategic example in the Amazon context. Caxiuanã has the potential for developing sustainable and community-based tourism, especially in bird watching, due to the region’s rich socio-biodiversity. This study aimed to diagnose the potential for implementing a simplified public use plan that benefits the local community and encourages responsible tourism. Additionally, it focused on surveying bird species of interest, developing a bird guide, understanding the profiles of bird watchers and local communities, and mapping current attractions and visiting conditions. A total of 395 bird species were recorded, including endemic and threatened species. An illustrated guide was developed to promote birdwatching. The local communities showed interest in tourism, highlighting the need for organization and training, while the potential attractions require adequate infrastructure, including lodging, signage, facilities, among others. It is concluded that sustainable tourism is a significant vector for regional development, provided it is well planned, with the engagement of local communities and respect for the environment. Thus, public policies that strengthen the management of Conservation Units and promote inclusive and educational tourism in the territory are necessary.
